After Lab × Arto Saari
From a board to a lens
After Lab meets Finnish photographer and director Arto Saari, a legendary figure in the world of professional skateboarding. An artist steeped in street and board culture since childhood, his lens captures raw moments with authenticity, emotion and an instantly recognisable visual identity.
Arto Saari, life as a playground
Skater of the Year, Photographer of the Year
Born in 1981 in Seinäjoki, Finland, Arto Saari was named Skater of the Year by Thrasher magazine in 2001 - one of the most prestigious awards in world skateboarding. After an exceptional career marked by a graceful, technical and committed style, video sections that have left their mark on the history of skateboarding and boundless creativity, he is gradually putting down the board to pick up the camera, with the same intensity.
His photographic work highlights raw emotion, freedom, rebellion and the beauty emanating from unexpected worlds - themes he has encountered on every surf spot in the world. He now lives on the island of Oahu in Hawaii, the birthplace of surfing, and documents this culture from the handlebars of his bicycle.
We invite you to discover Arto's work:
The poncho as film
Three photos, three moments, one collection.
For the After Lab, Arto didn't choose just one image, he opened the archive of his book Bike Path. Three photographs from his Hawaiian world, three distinct moods, transposed onto ponchos and towels with the same precision as in his exhibitions. On fabric, in movement, under the light of the seaside, each image takes on a new dimension that the screen alone cannot offer.
Aloha
The Aloha sign at the entrance to Honolulu, bathed in a unique light effect. An image from his book Bike Path, taken from his bike on the North Shore. Arto's entire philosophy in a single frame: movement, the road, the light of the Pacific.
Longboard
A longboard on the North Shore beach, bathed in the golden light of sunset, a composition that captures the magic of the moment, the anticipation, the glide, and the moment when the sky and ocean merge.
Rainbow
A rainbow rising out of a deep blue ocean, spreading across an entirely pink sky: an immersive, almost unreal image, the work of a photographer who knows how to wait for the perfect moment.
